Having Trouble Kicking the Bottled Water Habit?

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Tap water costs 0.002 per gallon. If you filter it, the cost is about 0.25 gallon. Bottle water is about $10.66 gallon. Cost wise, giving it up is a no-brainer. If you are worried about drinking your tap water, test it. If it needs filtration, buy the proper filter.

You can get complete details on how to test your water and get the correct filter by reading Take Back the Tap Guide to Home Tap Water Filtration.

Soda is Flavored Tap Water: Why not just make your own?

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

SodaStreamIn previous posts, I wrote about drinking tap water instead of buying bottled water. It’s better for the environment. You aren’t throwing away bottles. You aren’t draining the water from someone else’s community. And your own tap water doesn’t require fuel to get to you. Tap water is earth-friendly!

Soda presents the same issue. It’s basically flavored tap water. It uses a lot of energy to transport. It takes water from someone else’s community. It creates a lot of waste from bottles. So why not make your own?

It’s pretty easy to carbonate your own tap water using a seltzer maker. SodaStream has great kits that are easy—and fun—to use. You can buy their flavors or make your own. Or just drink the carbonated water straight. It’s refreshing!

SUNY Potsdam Student Takes Back the Tap!

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Matt Williams is a SUNY Potsdam student (Biology major) who won 3rd place in the I Heart Tap Water Student Video Contest. He makes a compelling case for drinking tap water instead of using bottled water. Tap water is free, portable, and convenient. Bottled water costs money and, in most cases, is just tap water. On the other hand, the bottles from bottled water create garbage, release toxins, and, if reused, are prone to growing bacteria from all the pores created as the bottle degrades. Take a look at his video!
